The Story of Chorizo Approved Records

Robert Chacon Jr., Robert E. Michael, and William C. Ballard started Chorizo Approved in 2001. It was, at that time, an online portfolio for the three artists, as well as online magazine for the Austin underground music scene. Chacon was contributing to the photography and writing, Ballard had his hands busy with silk-screening posters for various local and international acts and venues, and Michael headed the graphic design and web design for the website. They covered local bands like Tia Carrera, Gorch Fock, Attack Formation, and Those Peabody's to name a few, and in turn, had the honor of interviewing better known acts like Fugazi, Dance Disaster Movement, and music producer/artist Tim Kerr. In 2002, Chorizo Approved decided to host day-shows in their home and in local venues during SXSW. Their purpose was and still is, to showcase new up-and-coming acts, local bands, as well as great out-of-town or international bands like Electric Eel Shock and The Dirty Novels, giving the audience an opportunity to see amazing music without having to buy a wristband or a badge. Some years have even seen multi-media showcases with film screenings, sculpture, photography, paintings and performance art. Chorizo Approved has had a showcase every year since that first go in 2002, and over the years, has had over 60 different artists grace them with amazing performances during SXSW, not to mention hosting over a hundred acts over the years in non-SXSW related events.

This brings us to the 2004 Chorizo Approved showcase, which is the start of Chorizo Approved Records. After working with and befriending numerous bands, venues, artists, and labels, Robert Chacon Jr. decided it was time to take it up a notch and make Chorizo Approved a label. His first release was a 200 copy, hand silk-screened, hand-packaged cd compilation which was released in concordance with the 2004 showcase. Since that time, the label has functioned as a co-operative with the artists it works with to sustain an open-minded and creative environment for the artists. With that said, every release is a unique and collaborative effort presented equally by the artist and Chorizo Approved Records. Chorizo Approved Records has had nine cd releases with more currently in the works, as well as a jump to vinyl in the near future. The label provides distribution for a few artists in the US like Afuche (NYC), and overseas like Italian labels, From Scratch Records and Deldelirio, as well as artists like Tortured By Turtles (Lithuania) and Oshar Oslon (Germany).

Finally, Chorizo Approved acts as unofficial booking agent for bands from all over the states as well as internationally. Providing venues and housing for bands that do not have any connections out of their hometown, state, or country. The goal is to help out fellow artists, create new and friendly connections, and provide an arena for people to see or hear something new and different but especially, entertaining.
